Charles HOWELL III

About

Although he did not add to his solitary US PGA Tour victory - the 2002 Michelob Championship at Kingsmill - in 2003, he did surpass the $2 million mark in earnings for the second year in succession and enhanced his reputation as one of the most consistent players on the US PGA Tour, making the cut in 29 of his 31 starts and playing the most rounds of anyone on the Tour, namely 115. Ended the year well with his second consecutive second place finish in the Tour Championship before making his debut for the United States in The Presidents Cup contest in South Africa. Was introduced to the game at the age of seven by his next door neighbour and won five tournaments before his 11th birthday. Indeed a career in golf seemed assured at an early age for the man who grew up a stone's throw from Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters Tournament. Shot his first sub 70 round at the age of ten - the same age at which he began taking lessons from coach David Leadbetter. Leading amateur in the US, turned professional in 2000 and made the cut in seven of first 11 events on the US PGA Tour after being granted Special Temporary Member status. Became Rookie of the Year in 2001 and is a member of Augusta Country Club, which borders the famous 'Amen Corner' stretch of Augusta National.
